Primarily set in an 1870 Paris opera house, the story centers on Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum), a young and innocent chorus girl who longs to become a leading opera singer, but is unable to rise above the arrogant preening of soprano diva Carlotta (Minnie Driver). Critics praised the visuals and acting, particularly the performances of Butler and Rossum, but criticized the writing, directing and unnecessary deviations from the stage version.For the unfamiliar, the musical Phantom is loosely adapted from Gaston Leroux's classic novel of the same name. The Phantom of the Opera is a 2004 musical drama film based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1910 French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux.
